Creator monetisation gets discussed as though it were one thing. It is at least six things, they pay on completely different mechanics, and the one most people chase first is usually the worst of them.
Here is what each route actually pays, what it demands of you, and the order they are worth building in.
Platform payouts are the worst-paying route, and the first everyone tries
Being paid by the platform itself — creator funds, ad revenue share, view bonuses — is the most visible option and the least reliable. Rates are set unilaterally, change without warning, and have trended downward across every major platform.
It is not worthless. It is simply not a business, because you have no pricing power and no relationship with whoever is paying. Treat it as a floor, not a plan.
Brand deals pay the most per hour and scale the worst
A sponsored post is the highest hourly rate most creators will ever earn. It is also entirely manual: every deal needs negotiating, briefing, producing and invoicing, and the income stops the moment you do.
Brand deals are worth taking, but they are a job rather than an asset. The creators who last build something alongside them.
Affiliate income is slow, then it compounds
Affiliate pays a share of a sale you referred. The first months are discouraging, because you are earning percentages of a small number of purchases from a small audience.
What changes it is accumulation. Every post that keeps getting found keeps earning, so year two earns from year one’s work as well as its own. It is the only route on this list where doing nothing new still produces income, and it works at audience sizes far below what brands will pay for.
What each route is really worth
| Route | Pays on | Works from | Honest assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform payouts | Views | Threshold varies | Unreliable and falling. A floor, not a plan. |
| Brand deals | Deliverables | ~10k engaged | Best hourly rate, no compounding, stops when you do. |
| Affiliate | Sales referred | Any size | Slow start, compounds indefinitely. Start here. |
| Own product | Direct sales | Any size | Highest margin, most work, needs real trust first. |
| Memberships | Recurring fee | ~1k devoted | Predictable but demands constant output. |
| Merchandise | Unit sales | Community identity | Marketing that pays for itself. Rarely a real income line. |
The order worth building in
Start affiliate immediately, whatever your size, because it is the only route with no minimum and the only one that compounds — it works for creators with small audiences as readily as large ones. Add brand deals when someone approaches you, and use that income to buy time rather than treating it as the goal. Consider a product or membership once you can name what your audience specifically comes to you for.
The mistake is sequencing it backwards — waiting for follower counts that unlock brand deals while ignoring the route that would already have been earning.
